I don't think it's rude...it depends how you approach someone - one thing that constantly annoys me is when people rest for like 5 minutes or talk to other people and hog the machine when there is only one in the gym...I work out before work in the morning and I only have a limited amount of time to work out, so I want to try to get the most in in an hour or so. I think if you're a jerk about it, then it's rude, but if you ask nicely if you can work in a set, I don't think it's rude.
References :
Been working out for a long time

I don't think it's rude, in general and compared to some of the other stuff I see. like people need machines, and sitting doing nothing for a few minutes on a mchine is a huge interruption to the other guys workout which wouldn't be a big deal, but since he's not doing anything, it is kinda rude on the guy who isn't doing anything.

besides compared to the people not putting weights back on the rack when they're done and people talking to you during your w/o and on their phones during theirs, asking politely to switch a machine when you arent using it isn't bad lol
References :
I don't think that is appropriate behavior. My husband and I have been attending Gym for a long time and that is not a ethical behavior. It is courteous to wait your turn. It is a rude behavior
