Sport Facilities are about 40,000 square feet with the amenities such as basketball courts, pool, maybe a shop for clothes thats about it.

Active gyms are about 25,000 square feet

Active gyms do not have- pool/jacuzzi some may have steam room, no bball courts

both have kids daycare, cardio floor, and weight resistance floor, both have aerobics classes

Theres a difference in the price, you can either buy a membership that allows you to go to all ACTIVE gyms in the area or buy a SPORT membership that allows you to go to all SPORT and all ACTIVE gyms.

Your attitude when picking a gym should not be about how much $$$ is it going to be, its about if you can see yourself working out there achieving your fitness goals.

I worked at 4 different 24 hour fitness gyms in orange county. Ive never been to any 24 hour fitness in sandiego so i cant help you there

I can tell you this...all 24 hour fitness are crowed on mondays-thursdays especially during the night after 5 pm

In my working days at 24 hour fitness... i got less complaints at the old grandma/grandpa gyms cuz there were always places available, no distractions, etc.

It depends on you...if you like the environment thats high paced w just about people on all the equipment with high energy go for the better lookin jobs

if you want an environment were equipment is a bit old, less people, less noise, go to the ones that arent as nice looking. My better days were working at a sport club cuz i made more money but as far as working out myself i preferred the old active club in buena park, ca we were all like a family there...small little gym but i got the job done :-)
References :
24 hour fitness employee august 2005 - april 2008.
i used to spend a lot of time in san diego and have used quite a few 24 Hours there. some of them in SD are good, some are not.

the one in Pacific Beach is great. i used that one mostly. i also like the one on Balboa. The one at UTC is terrible. don't go there. the one near Qualcomm is bad too.

I've also used one up in Rancho Bernardo that wasn't too bad.

Hope that helps.
References :
They are good, and aren't going to swindle money out of you. Just make sure you're going to use the membership, and ignore those stuck up hussies that would otherwise try to discourage you from maintaining a regular regimen.
